WIU Founders' Day marks 30 years of honors program

MACOMB (AP) — Western Illinois University's Founders' Day celebration on Sept. 23, will mark the 30th anniversary of the college's honors program.

The honors fete will include a student reception, a panel discussion of distinguished alumni, and an evening social.

The honors program — which attained college-level status in 1999 — was founded in 1983 and initially led by WIU history professor Gordon Kirk. It opened to about 400 students who lived in special residence halls where they could study together.

Officials say the program — now called the Centennial Honors College — is an important recruiting tool for those students looking for a college with additional learning opportunities.

Founders' Day commemorates the university's history and accomplishments of past and present students, faculty and staff.
