ELIZABETH – Apple River Fort State Historic Site will be the location of a militia reenactment Sept. 28.

Historically-dressed interpreters will perform from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 311 E. Myrtle St.

Gov. John Reynolds called up local militias to drive off Chief Black Hawk’s people in 1832. A militia unit includes ordinary citizens, farmers, and laborers who are called to duty for an immediate but temporary threat.

Interpreters will recreate the militia’s mustering out as they turn in their equipment, make claims for losses, and lower the 24-star American flag to celebrate the end of the Black Hawk War.

Admission is free.
