Boys roundup: Wildcatz hold on for road win

Newman freshman, Dixon senior run well

The Eastland-Pearl City Wildcatz controlled the first half Saturday afternoon in Monmouth. They then survived the seconed half in a 28-20 victory over Monmouth-Roseville.

EPC (2-0) led 28-6 at halftime, but watched all-state running back Martel Hunter score two of his three touchdowns in the second half, cutting the lead to eight with 11:13 to play.

Donny Groezinger ran for 126 yards and two TDs. Eric Schaney added 73 yards and a score. Devin Heeren hit Skylar Paulson on a 22-yard pass for EPC’s other touchdown.

Hunter, who was held to 22 yards on 10 carries in a Week 1 loss to Dixon, ran 27 times for 186 yards against EPC.

Cross country

Ahlers leads Comets in Oregon: Newman freshman Chris Ahlers covered the 3-mile Oregon Park West course in 16:52 to finish fifth at the Oregon Open.

Other top locals included Brayden Hamblen (sixth, 16:54) and Seth Williams (seventh, 17:10) of Rock Falls, Bryan Reyes (eighth, 17:27) of Newman and Ryan Taylor (10th, 17:30) of Bureau Valley.

Thorpe leads Dukes in Iowa: Senior Simon Thorpe finished eighth overall to lead Dixon to a ninth-place team finish at the 14-team Spartan Challenge at Crow Creek Park in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Thorpe finished with a time of 16 minutes, 36 seconds. The next Dixon finisher was R.J. Trevino, who was 25th in 17:20.

Alston paces Warriors in Galesburg: Zach Alston took 13th with a time of 17:14 to lead Sterling to eighth place in the 12-team Galesburg Invitational at Lake Storey in Galesburg.
