Local roundup: Resilient Sterling soccer rallies in Rochelle

Oregon golfers' depth makes difference at home

The Sterling soccer team flashed some resilience, first surrendering a two-goal lead then winning 3-2 in Rochelle.

Tony Diaz and Carlos Gallardo put the Golden Warriors (2-1-2) up 2-0 in the nonconference match before the Hubs drew even. Gallardo added a second and decisive tally with 1:55 to play.

Faith Christian 2, Quad City Christian 2: Twice Ben Bierdeman gave Faith a lead, and both times the visitor drew even in Grand Detour.

Bierdeman scored a goal in both halves for Faith (0-1-1).

Boys golf

Dixon 165, LaSalle-Peru 190: The Dukes had four scores of 45 or better to cruise in a NIB-12 West dual at Senica’s Oak Ridge.

Austin Thomas’ 3-over 39 was good for medalist, while Cord Schroeder shot a 40 and Ryan Dixon fired a 41. John Brechon (45) also counted toward the team score for Dixon (6-0).

Oregon 166, Richmond-Burton 168: The Hawks’ balance helped them edge the Rockets at Silver Ridge Golf Course.

Mitchell Nehrkorn’s 3-over 39 for Oregon (4-3, 3-1 Big Northern) tied Richmond-Burton’s Jordan Hahn for medalist honors, but Ben Gardner (41), Carson Buck (42) and Taylor Brubaker (44) sliding in behind Nehrkorn made the difference.

Fulton 180, Newman 183, Amboy 196: Matt Dail and Brett Terrock both shot 42s to lead the Steamers at Emerald Hill.

Todd Nelson and Tucker Shoemaker both shot 44s for Newman, while Griffin Kozeal led Amboy, also with a 44.

Hall 171, Bureau Valley 191, Prophetstown 203: Grant Ames paced the Prophets with a 42.

Jackson Ames chipped in for an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole to card a 43.

Polo 184, Pearl City 201: Five Marcos shot a 47 or better, including Dylan Bushman, whose 43 tied lone AFC golfer Graye Freeman for medalist honors.

Matthew Handel, Tristin Woodin and Sawyer Frano all carded 47s for Polo (2-6, 2-3 NUIC East), with Brix Clayton adding a 48.

Girls golf

Lena-Winslow 202, Sterling 250: Michala Smith led the Golden Warriors with a 54 at Emerald Hill.

Le-Win’s Lexi Graf was the meet’s medalist at 46.

Abi Scheidecker leads Oregon at Silver Ridge: Abi Scheidecker carded a 41 for medalist honors, but the Hawks’ three-golfer roster meant they did not post a team score, while Richmond-Burton totaled 185 at Silver Ridge Golf Course.

Girls tennis

Sterling 4, Mendota 1: The Warriors swept the singles matches and won the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches at home.

Girls swimming

Byron 104, Guilford 79: Despite winning just four of the 12 events, the Tigers’ depth was too much for Guilford in Byron.

Kassie Paul won the 200 IM (2:28.49) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.34), and also joined Dixon’s Kaylyn Rice and Abbey Blackbourn and Byron’s Kennedy Halsmer in a 200 medley relay victory (2:02.35). Rice also won the 100 backstroke (1:09.34).
