Martells shines in Ashford win

Former Sterling standout Morgan Martells slammed nine kills and stuffed five blocks as the Ashford Saints defeated Clarke University in a five-set match in Clinton, Iowa.

Ashford (7-3) dropped the first two sets before rallying for the win, handing Clarke (5-1) its first loss of the season.

On the year, Martells leads the Saints in attack percentage (.305) and blocks (43), and her 66 kills rank fourth on the squad.


Bears restructure Peppers’ contract

For the second time in a little more than 2 years the Chicago Bears have tweaked the contract of defensive end Julius Peppers to create salary-cap room.

According to reporter Brian McIntyre, the Bears converted $3 million of Peppers’ $12.9 million base salary for this season to a signing bonus. That reduced his salary for this season to $9.9 million and created $2 million in cap savings for the Bears, who have been right up against the cap.


Girardi: Rivera should rethink retiring

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he intends to speak to Mariano Rivera during the offseason to see whether the star closer might want to reconsider his planned retirement.

Rivera, 43, notched his 40th save Tuesday against the White Sox but insists this will be his last season. Girardi said that given Rivera’s effectiveness and good health, he might feel differently come January.


Obama thanks
Sweden for Hawks

President Barack Obama’s love of his White Sox is well established. On Wednesday, he threw a little love the Blackhawks way.

During a joint news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on Wednesday in Stockholm, Obama thanked Sweden for exporting a few of their countrymen to the Blackhawks. Center Marcus Kruger as well as defensemen Niklas Hjalmarsson and Johnny Oduya all are originally from Sweden.


Mayweather to earn record money

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. will earn a record guaranteed purse of $41.5 million for his Sept. 14 fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Mayweather’s purse will be $9 million more than the previous record of $32 million, which he earned for his May 2012 fight with Miguel Cotto, as well as this May’s bout with Roberto Guerrero.
