Rutherford tabs Kim running mate

CHICAGO (AP) – Republican state Treasurer Dan Rutherford says if he’s elected governor in 2014 his lieutenant governor’s primary focus will be creating and keeping jobs in Illinois.

Rutherford and his running mate, Chicago attorney Steve Kim, appeared together Thursday in downtown Chicago for their first public event.

Rutherford says he would create the Governor’s Office of Job Creation and Retention. It would be headed by Kim and would serve as a “one-stop shop” for businesses. He says Kim, whose law firm does international and trade law and business development law, also will personally work to recruit companies.

Rutherford says business owners have told him over-regulation and government “red tape” is hurting their ability to grow.

Illinois’ unemployment rate of 9.2 percent in July was one of the nation’s highest.
