Support of river cleanup appreciated

On Aug.17, the Rock River Development Authority organized a cleanup on the Rock River. Our group was responsible for cleaning the area upriver from the Nelson Bridge and worked out of Moonlight Bay Marina.

We had 15 volunteers, ranging in age from 14 to 80-something. Wiersema Waste Service donated a Dumpster, as they have for the past 5 years, and this group filled it up. They pulled sections of old dock, railroad ties, steel barrels, a heating oil tank, and assorted trash from the river.

Moore Tires also has supported us in the past, and they disposed of the 12 tires that were pulled from the river.

Granted, some of the volunteers may have been misled about what they were signing up for, but everyone worked hard and made a difference that day.

Thanks to all who helped and to the Rock River Development Authority for organizing this event. Thanks to the volunteers who provided their boats. A special thanks to Moonlight Bay, which provided a place to work from and a great lunch to everyone who participated, and to Wiersema Waste Service and Moore Tires for their continued support of this event.
