Rachel A. Kirk
MOUNT MORRIS – Rachel A. Kirk, 81, of Mount Morris, formerly of Dixon, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Dixon, the daughter of Leslie and Rosalind (Knapp) Smith.
She married William Kirk on Dec. 29, 1956, at St. Patrick’s Church in Dixon. For the first 10 years of their marriage, Rachel was an active military wife and mother. Upon William’s retirement from the U.S. Air Force, they returned to their beloved hometown to raise their family. She was a bookkeeper for several area businesses, including Franklin Grove Nursing Home, Dixon Health Center, Dr. Crisham’s Orthodontics and The Finishing Touch. William preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 2012.
Her children would call her the world’s greatest mother and she would be quick to agree. She was the glue holding her family together and the main support behind all of her children’s endeavors. She was happiest when her house was filled with the chaos of her family playing games, sharing food and laughing with one another.
She will be missed by her five children, William (Lori Schrupp) Kirk Jr., of Oregon, Karen (Gerald) Kaufman, of Milledgeville, Kelly (Edward) Handschuh, of Mount Morris, Daniel (Dee Valentino) Kirk, of Rockford, and Patrick (Heather) Kirk of Byron; her 15 grandchildren, Courtney Kirk, Katie McKay, Jon Kirk, Faith Morrison, Lee (Kelsy Hiyakumoto) Morrison, Kelsey Handschuh, Holly Handschuh, Nick LaFiura, Alyse (Ronni) Daccardo, Sam LaFiura, Haley Kirk, Conar Kirk, Riley Kirk, Logan Kirk, and Ethan Kirk; her four great-grandchildren; Whitney Kirk, Andon Taylor, Lilly Harriet, and Trinity Harriet; and beloved extended family members Johnie Mudge, Leslie Smith, Sandra (John) Rountree, Christine (Doug) Ivins, Kay (Andrew) Yowell, Craig (Peggy) Cullen, Howard and Beth Schumacher, Lynette Kirk, Tanya Bowers, Ashley Frye, Sarah Moe, and many more too numerous to name.
She also was preceded in death by her three siblings, Leslie (Virginia) Smith, Roseann (Lyle) Heinzeroth and Darlene (William) Cullen.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Morris, with the Rev. Josh Ehrler officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon.
