Delia S. Vargas

STERLING – Delia S. Vargas, 85, of Sterling, died Sat. Aug. 31, 2013 at her home.

She was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Brownsville, Texas, the daughter of John and Carrie Saenz. Delia married Ambrose Vargas on Dec. 19, 1953, in Sterling. Ambrose died Aug. 17, 2010.

Delia was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and in the past had been a volunteer at St. Mary School and Newman Central Catholic High School. She was a member of the Spanish Apostolate of the Sterling and Rockford Dioceses. Delia loved cooking, quilting, sewing, playing bingo, singing in the church choir and her “true home” of Brownsville, where she would visit every chance she could. Delia loved and mentored all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her two daughters, Linda Martinez and Mary (Steve) Ramos, both of Sterling; one stepson, Eric Vargas; her brother, Leonardo Saenz, of McAllen,Texas; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by four sisters, Margaret, Carrie, Mary and Aurora; five brothers, John, Homero, Mike, Nelle and Cipriano; and one stepdaughter, Veronica White.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling, with the Rosary being recited at 4:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Adalberto Sanchez officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials to St. Vincent de Paul food pantry would be appreciated.
