Walkers step off to battle poverty

STERLING – The second Society of St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor 5K Walk will be Sept. 28 at the Newman Central Catholic High School practice field.

Registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m., and the walk from 9 to 11 a.m. at the school, 1101 W. 23rd St.

The walk raises money for the society’s food pantry and for financial aid to community members in need.

Pledge forms are available in Sterling at: St. Mary Catholic Church and St. Mary Parish Center, 600 Avenue B; Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2222 Avenue J; and Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, 211 Locust St.

From noon to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, forms also can be picked up at the society’s office.

In Rock Falls, the registration forms are available at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 708 10th Ave.

Walkers younger than 18 need parental consent to take part.

Monetary donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul. Checks should be made payable to St. Vincent de Paul Society Sterling, Rock Falls, and send them to the office, 7 W. Sixth St., Sterling, IL 61081.
