Morrison council to meet

MORRISON – The Morrison City Council meets at 7 p.m. in the Whiteside County Board chambers in the County Courthouse, 400 N. Cherry St.

Parent Academy on Common Core

DIXON – The Dixon Public Schools plans to hold a Parent Academy on the Common Core State Standards at 6:30 p.m. in the high school’s auditorium.

Tea party members who are opposed to the standards are among those who plan to attend the event.

Dixon volleyball visits Sterling

The Duchesses, 2-1 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 West, visit a tough place to win, Musgrove Fieldhouse, at 6 p.m.

Dixon is 3-6 overall; Sterling, 13-2 and 1-1 in the West Division, is coming off a convincing win over Ottawa on Thursday.


Sterling school board to meet

STERLING – The Sterling Public Schools Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. in the Sterling High School Library.

The meeting will include a public hearing on the 2014 fiscal year budget, among other agenda items.

Event aids suicide prevention efforts

STERLING – The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s annual Out of the Darkness Walk will be held at 11 a.m. at Sinnissippi Park.

Check-in will be at 10 a.m. Participation is free, but walkers can go to to learn how to raise funds and help with suicide prevention.

Registration is requested at the website or by searching for “Out of the Darkness Sauk Valley” on Facebook.

5K Walk to help area poor

STERLING – Sign-up is on for the second annual Society of St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor 5K Walk, to be held at the Newman Central Catholic High School practice field.

Registration will be held from 8 to 9 a.m., and the walk from 9 to 11 a.m. at the school at 1101 W. 23rd St. in Sterling.

The walk raises money for the society’s food pantry and for the financial aid it provides to all members of the community in need.

Pledge forms are available at St. Mary and Sacred Heart Catholic churches in Sterling, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Rock Falls, at the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, and at the society office, 7 W. Sixth St., which is open from noon to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Walkers younger than 18 need parental consent.

Donations also may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, to support its mission of caring for the poor. Make checks payable to St. Vincent de Paul Society Sterling/Rock Falls, and send them to the office.
