Dixon girls tennis wins; Oregon volleyball beats Duchesses

Hurley, Warriors handle Cavs

The Sterling Golden Warriors opened the Northern Illinois Big 12 West slate with their first win of the year Tuesday at Emerald Hill.

Behind medalist Ryan Hurley's even-par 36, Sterling defeated LaSalle-Peru 160-183. Kyle Sinn and Austin Cook shot 41s, and Zach Rehmert and Lucas Campbell added 42s for the Warriors (1-1, 1-0).

Kyle Hanck paced the Cavaliers with a 42.

Forreston 182, Oregon 183, Rockford Lutheran 184: The Hawks took second at a nip-and-tuck triangular at Silver Ridge.

Ben Gardner and Taylor Brubaker paced Oregon (2-1, 2-0 Big Northern West) with matching 44s, and Mitchell Nehrkorn added a 46. Lutheran's Spencer Horst was medalist with a 39.

Ridgewood 171, Erie 179, Rockridge 193: The Cardinals' Koby Kuhnen missed medalist by one shot at Lake Erie.

Kuhnen's 38 was one stroke higher than Ridgewood's Jack Bumann's 37. Brandon Heppner (44) and Tanner Brockway (47) added scores in the 40s for Erie.

Girls golf

Erie 209, Rockridge 221: Katlyn Weber's 50 led the Cardinals to victory in a Three Rivers crossover dual at Lake Erie.

Lexi Floming and Morgan Newton both shot 52 for Erie, and Sera Bebon added a 55.

Jensen Peterson's 53 paced the Rockets.

Girls tennis

Dixon 3, Mendota 2: The Duchesses won a pair of doubles matches and a singles contest to open the season with a win on the road.

Katie Hammit won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Hayley Kent and Jessica VanOosten won a third-set tiebreaker 10-6 at No. 1 doubles. Maribeth Johnson and Stephanie Tressel also went to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, winning it 10-1.

Volleyball

Oregon def. Dixon 25-12, 25-20: Cydney Long had three kills and four blocks, and younger sister Whitney stuffed five blocks as the Hawks beat the Duchesses in the season opener for both squads.

Delaney Mahoney set for 22 assists for Oregon (1-0), and Jordan Wilken had three aces and three digs.

Amy Rotella paced Dixon (0-1) with four kills and three aces. Rachel Gascoigne dished 10 assists, and Olivia Sztochmal recorded two digs.

Bureau Valley def. Hall 25-15, 25-16: Lindsey Hoffert had five kills and four digs, and Carlie Bickett chipped in three kills and two blocks as the Storm handled Hall in Spring Valley.

Shannon Reuter added five digs and two aces for BV (1-0), and Sydney Lebahn set for 14 assists.

College volleyball

Moraine Valley def. Sauk Valley 25-20, 25-17, 25-17: The Skyhawks traveled to Palos Hills and came home with a straight-sets loss to the No. 7 team in the NJCAA Division II poll.

Kalli Scheppers led the offense with 11 kills, while Brianna Correa paced the defense with 26 digs for Sauk (4-3). Karly Koch had 28 assists, while Kayla Kurz and Morgan Mammosser spiked six kills apiece.
