DUARTE, Calif. – Richard L. “Rick” Galvan, also known as “Weasel,” 54, passed away Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at his home in Duarte.

Rick was born Dec. 9, 1958, in Sterling, to Rudy and Melinda (Gonzalez) Galvan. He was raised and educated in Sterling, graduating in 1977 from Sterling High School. Shortly after graduating, Rick relocated to California, where he made his home until the time of his passing.

While in California, he met and married Liz Sullivan, and they had two children, Daniel and Amber. Although divorced, Rick and Liz remained close and caring friends. Liz, Daniel, and Amber survive him in California.

Rick made his living primarily in the construction trades, at one point owning his own awning company, “Rick’s Canvas.” Most recently, he was employed by Sullivan Construction.

Rick was an avid sportsman, having participated in a variety of sports during his school years. As an adult, he played softball, and acquired a passion for the game of golf. He also umpired baseball and softball for many years, being one of the most requested umpires in his area. He coached both of his children’s numerous sports teams, and was named “Manager of the Year” in 1998 for baseball.

Surviving him locally are his mother, Melinda (Frank) Guentert; sisters, Kathy (Ken) Fossett and Marta (Todd) Wiggins; brothers, Rudy (Nikki) Galvan, David (Terri) Galvan, Michael Galvan, and Nick (Debbie) Galvan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rudy Galvan Sr.; and two very special nephews, Jaime Dingley and Rudy Galvan III.

Rick recently returned to Illinois and spent some wonderful quality time with his family. For that, his family will be forever grateful.

Cremation rites have been accorded in California. A memorial service and party celebrating his life will be at a later date.

A private memorial service was held Aug. 25 in Sterling, at the home where Rick was born and raised.

Rick was known and loved by all with whom he crossed paths. He could bring a smile and laugh to everyone, and always was known to be the life of the party. He loved his family beyond measure, as they also loved him. Rick will be sorely missed by all. May he rest in peace.
