POLO – George C. Smith, 83, of Polo, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, surrounded by his loving family.  

George was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Polo, the son of Archibald and Margaret (Lonergan) Smith. His school years were spent in Polo, where he participated in sports and graduated from Polo Community High School in 1947. He then attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, before enlisting in the Marine Corps, where he served from 1951 to 1953 and achieved the rank of staff sergeant. He was employed by Kable News Co. in Mount Morris before opening a real estate office in Polo.

He was very active in community events, and participated on many community boards and councils. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Polo, where throughout the years, he served as a parish council member, lector, and extraordinary minister. George was a member of Polo Rotary Club and Rock Falls Rotary Club. He also served as a district governor for Rotary from 1980 to 1981. He was active in Polo American Legion Post 83, where he had 62 years of continuous service.

George is survived by his twin sister, Jean (Smith) Wagenknecht of Kansas City, Mo.; his children, Jim (Jeri) Smith of Concord, Calif., Ginger (Dan) Murray of Sterling, Lisa (Ken) Leonard of Polo, Arch (Charlie) Smith of Rockford, and Neil (Denise) Smith of Polo; his grandchildren, Crystal (Chris) Evans of Aurora, Kyle (Kristen) Leonard of Plainfield, Nathan Murray of Chicago, and Logan Murray of Sterling; and his great-grandchildren, Quhari, Tessa, and Te Evans, and Devin and Blake Leonard.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Neil and Edward Smith.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Polo Family Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Polo. Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
