Garage fire in Mount Morris

Published: Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013 10:18 p.m. CST

The cause of a fire Monday afternoon that destroyed a garage still was under investigation Tuesday.

"We arrived to find the wood frame unattached garage fully involved ...," Mount Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough said. "We were able to rapidly get the fire knocked down and extinguished. Although the garage is a total loss, the house a mere 5 feet away sustained only minor fire damage."

The garage at 102 S. Fletcher Ave. belonged to Terry and Dawn Stevens; their family was at home when the fire was discovered at 3:25 p.m., but no one was injured, Hough said.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is assisting with the investigation.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
