Coroner: Head injury likely cause of death

MOUNT CARROLL – A head injury is the likely cause of death of a 24-year-old Mount Carroll man who died after an ATV accident Sunday night, the Winnebago County coroner’s office said Tuesday.

Shawn Miller was not wearing a helmet when he crashed into a tree on Meyers Road around 8:18 p.m. Sunday, Sheriff Jeff Doran said.

Miller was riding with friends when he became separated from the group. As they were loading their four-wheelers onto a trailer to leave, they found Miller lying in the road, unconscious.

He was airlifted to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he died at 12:20 p.m. Monday.

In his obituary, Miller’s family remembered the 2007 graduate of West Carroll High School as a “rambunctious kid” who “enjoyed baseball, football, the Mississippi River, motorcycle riding, four-wheeling, mowing, country music, and trucks.”

He worked at Manny’s Pizza in Savanna, owned by his grandfather, Manny Castro, throughout his life, and also worked for 2 years at Titan Tire in Freeport.

He is survived by, among others, his parents, Douglas Miller of Mount Carroll, Cheryl Lawson of Thomson and Kellie Castro of Savanna, and seven siblings.

His visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. His funeral is 10 a.m. Friday, also at the funeral home, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll.
