Charles A. Behrens
WAUKESHA, Wis. – Charles A. Behrens, 99, formerly of Sterling, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at Seasons Hospice, Merrill Hills Manor in Waukesha.
Charles was born March 11, 1914, in Sterling, the son of George G. and Mabel M. (Biederstadt) Behrens. He attended Wallace School, and graduated from Sterling High School in 1932. He attended Bradley University for 2 years, and then graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. All of his working career was at National Manufacturing Co. in Sterling, except during World War II, when he worked for the Naval Ordnance Plant at Fairbanks Morse in Beloit, Wis.
He married Lorraine F. Dumke on Oct. 12, 1940. She preceded him in death on Nov. 12, 1993. They were active members of St. John Lutheran Church in Sterling. Charles was a charter member of the Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society, and served as treasurer for many years. He also was a member of Sterling Kiwanis for 25 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Georgia L. (Glenn) Unger of Madison, Cheryl C. (Thomas) Woodworth of Pewaukee, Wis., and Gail L. (Richard) Robinson of New Berlin, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Tricia Unger (Tim) Fenske, Bryce (Beth) Unger, Alyssa Unger (Dave) Krause, Tamra Woodworth (Ben) Schwyn, Erica Woodworth (Chris) Burns, Krista Robinson (Alan) Jones, and Kirk (Marcey) Robinson; and 13 great-grandchildren ranging in age from 2 weeks to 14 years old.
He also was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 18 and the memorial service at 11 a.m. Oct. 18 at St. John Lutheran Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Mark Oehlert officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling is handling arrangements.
A Charles Behrens Memorial Fund has been established.
