Kudos to former commissioner for accepting blame

Thank you, Ralph Contreras, for being the first "gentleman" to accept the blame for Rita's deceit by saying "we let the people down."

While she was being investigated, how could she keep on stealing $4 million more? At that point, shouldn't all of her assets have been frozen? Furthermore, did Rita even say that she was sorry? By the way, I received some "thank yous" and phone calls after I wrote my letter dated Aug. 8.

Hardin had some good points in his letter, "Waiting for the other shoe to fall." Another concern for me was that Rita' s boyfriend was never investigated. Or did I miss it?

On another topic, in the same issue of Aug. 22, Mary Mace was lobbying on gun control because her daughter was gunned down at Northern Illinois University 5 years ago. The same issue mentioned the three "bored" teenagers who shot Chris Lane, the Australian athlete. Just wanted to point out the senseless connection of these tragedies.

A reminder: Years ago, John Weitzel and I "begged" the mayor and Larry Reed to "hire" us as volunteers for the paid Riverfront executive position now held by Kay Miller. Imagine being rejected. Also, if Larry Reed wants to resign, he can and should. I don't think he needs to worry about his replacement.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
