MORRISON – A pretrial conference Friday in the state’s case against twice-convicted murderer Nicholas Sheley was postponed until Sept. 26.

Members of the media and public gathered at 11 a.m. Friday at the Whiteside County Courthouse when Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi entered the room to announce the postponement. There was a miscommunication between attorneys, he said.

Sheley, 34, is scheduled to stand trial in January in Rock Island for the deaths of Brock Branson, 29; his fiancée Kilynna Blake, 20; her 2-year-old son, Dayan; and Kenneth Ulve, 25, who were found beaten to death in a Rock Falls apartment 5 years ago.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Jan. 10 in Rock Island County Court.

Sheley already has been convicted of the murders of Ronald Randall, 65, of Galesburg, and Russell Reed, 93, of rural Sterling. He is serving two life sentences without parole for those murders.

He has appealed the decision in the Randall case.
