Cellphone tower to be complete by first football game

Start of construction on Sterling High campus was delayed

STERLING – A cellphone tower on the campus of Sterling High School will be complete in time for the first home football game.

Construction on the U.S. Cellular tower was scheduled to start June 1, but delays with contracts, permits and ordinances pushed the start to late June, Sterling Public Schools Superintendent Tad Everett said.

The work will be done, except for some landscaping, by Aug. 30, when Sterling hosts Metamora High School for the football season opener, he said.

The tower's power building also will serve as a ticket booth for the stadium.

The agreement between U.S. Cellular and the school district includes a 30-year lease. U.S. Cellular will pay $1,500 a month, with a 3 percent increase each year.

The tower will have an American flag on top.
