Great America hopes for new roller coaster

GURNEE (AP) — Six Flags Great America has gotten the go-ahead for a new wood roller coaster at the theme park north of Chicago.

The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/16MYYwV) that Gurnee's advisory planning and zoning board voted 5-0 to grant special permission for Great America to build the coaster. The ride will have a maximum height of 165 feet. That's above the property's allowable 125 feet.

Great America President Hank Salemi says the new roller coaster will be open for the 2014 season. He says new rides usually boost theme park attendance.

The panel will recommend that the Gurnee village board allow the coast. The board has the final say-so.

Great America says it will release full details about the new roller coaster later this month if it receives final approval.
