Audit estimates township missing $750,000

MORO (AP) — A new audit shows that more than $750,000 may have been taken from a southwestern Illinois community over the past decade.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1d1l8xQ ) says the review by an Alton accounting firm blames the lack of controls and oversight for the money missing in Madison County's 3,500-resident Moro Township.

No charges have been filed, though the accounting firm's report says the FBI is investigating.

The township northeast of Alton has an annual budget of about $400,000, collected from real estate taxes.

The audit recommends the township begin requiring two signatures for each check and that oversight of duties be established.

A message left at the township's hall wasn't immediately returned Tuesday.
