Teacher gained through trip

Thank you to Sauk Valley Media, WLLT, WIXN, KSB and St. Patrick’s Church for all their help with the Flashdance bus trip.

A big thanks to the lively busload (58) and Bonnie O’Connell, administrator of Heritage Square, who was kind enough to provide her own transportation. Special mention goes to Deb Moss, KSB valet, and Barb Peugh of Sterling, who were my greatest “recruiters.”

Leaving Dixon at 8 a.m. gave us enough time to see the Buckingham Fountain and Millennium Park, enjoy the flowers and grab lunch. People-watching in front of Cloud Gate (the Bean), sitting at the Pritzker Pavilion with the orchestra rehearsing for a Rachmaninoff concert in the background, it doesn’t get any better.

Off to the Cultural Center, my favorite building in all of Chicago. Karen Hakobyan, Armenian composer/pianist who at 28 years – already internationally renowned – gave a 45-minute free concert (Rachmaninoff and Beethoven).

Sitting under the “largest Tiffany stained-glass dome in the world” of the Preston Bradley Hall, Hakobyan said, “What a spectacular room to perform in.” My husband and I then walked to the Great Army of the Republic (GAR), an even nicer dome designed by Healy and Millet, passing through the various modern exhibition galleries. Everything was already wonderful even before the matinee. Flashdance was spectacular, receiving a standing ovation. Wow. She got really drenched.

After a great dinner, we sang great “oldies” as we drove into the breath-taking sunset. Thank you, Lord, for a truly blessed day.

Because of this trip, St. Mary School now has a full-time Spanish teacher, Jill Horn of SVCC, for fifth- through eighth-graders.

Note to readers: Josie Reyes Almassy was the trip coordinator and a volunteer Spanish teacher for third and fourth grades at St. Mary School.
