Bears sign Edwards to boost depth

After thinking about it for a day, the Bears decided to bring in a second veteran quarterback. Now they have options if they choose to keep a third-stringer on the roster when final cuts come Aug. 31.

Trent Edwards passed a physical and was signed to a 1-year contract Sunday, a day after the team added Jordan Palmer in the wake of Matt Blanchard breaking his left hand.

Dolphins lose TE Keller for season

Miami Dolphins rookie tight end Dion Sims started his first NFL game during Saturday night’s 24-17 preseason loss to the Houston Texans, and it likely won’t be his last of 2013.

Considering the season-ending knee injury Dustin Keller suffered in that game, the Dolphins are actively searching for replacement options.

A league source confirmed that Keller tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and medial collateral ligament (MCL) when Texans safety D.J. Swearinger’s helmet hit his right knee during a passing play that ended with Keller dropping the ball.

Ftizpatrick wins

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Incoming Northwestern freshman Matt Fitzpatrick pulled away late en route to defeating Oliver Goss, 4 & 3, in Sunday’s final at the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Fitzpatrick only trailed for four holes on the first 18, and took a 1-up lead into the second 18 at The Country Club. Goss squared the match on the 19th hole, but won only one more hole in falling to Fitzpatrick.
