Richard R. Saunders Sr.

STERLING – Richard R. Saunders Sr., 87, of Sterling, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

He was born on June 22, 1926, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Herbert L. and Marguerite F. (Turner) Saunders. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from June 13, 1944, until May 4, 1946. He married Beverly Kinison on Aug. 27, 1949, in Sterling. Mr. Saunders was employed as a Sterling letter carrier by the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years, retiring in 1993. He also owned and operated Dick’s Barber Shop in Sterling for 50 years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; two daughters, Kristy Sandborn of Waynesville, Mo., and Lisa M. (Patrick) Campbell of Sterling; one son, Richard R. “Rick” (Nancy) Saunders of Sterling; three sisters, Patricia (Joseph) Lendman of Dixon, Nancy (Paul) Pecheons of Dubuque, Iowa, and Doris (Tom) Bryant of Chadwick; two brothers, Curtis E. Saunders of St. Petersburg, Fla., and William (Fern) Saunders of Sterling; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and two brothers; and a niece, Cathy Saunders.

Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Adalberto Sanchez, celebrant, officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling. There will be no visitation.

McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling is handling arrangements.
