DIXON – The Empowering disABILITIES Resource Expo will be Oct. 2.
The educational event – designed to highlight the abilities of people with disabilities, promote access for them, and raise awareness – will be from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Sauk Valley Community College, 173 state Route 2.
Families and individuals can ask questions, share ideas, and learn more about supports and services.
It will feature more than 20 exhibitors.
Chris Errera of Schaumburg, a composer and pianist with diastrophic dwarfism, will perform.
Jessica Madrigal, technical assistance specialist at Great Lakes Americans with Disabilities Act in Chicago, will present on the differences between the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
She will talk about what transitioning students need to know as they move from high school to college and/or the workforce.
Rhonda Best of Family Matters Parent Training and Information Center will presenting on working with students with psychiatric disabilities in the school setting.
Michele Miller, executive director of Northwestern Illinois Center for Independent Living in Sterling, will present on self-advocacy and empowerment.
Local artists with disabilities will display their work.
Vision Through Words will post poetry written by blind individuals.
Shooting Stars, the Newman Central Catholic High School cheerleading squad, will perform.
Pegasus Special Riders of Oregon will give live therapeutic riding demonstrations.
