PEORIA – Verna Mae King, 82, of Peoria, formerly of Dixon, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at OSF Hospice Home in Peoria.
She was born Dec. 10, 1930, in Rockford, the daughter of Phelchner and Estella (Wheatley) Spotts Sr. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Dixon, where she sang in the choir. She also was a member of Higher Dimensions Praise and Worship Church in Peoria. She married Alex King on Dec. 29, 1983. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1998.
She is survived by her daughter, Irma (the Rev. Robert) Costic of Peoria; two grandchildren, Jason and Jerame Costic; brothers, Harry Spotts of Dixon and Ed Spotts of Rock Falls; and several nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; one son; three brothers, Phelchner Spotts Jr., Donald Spotts, and LaVerne Jackson; and one sister, Shirlie St. James.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. and the funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church in Dixon, with the Rev. Robert Posley officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon. Jones Funeral Home in Dixon is handling arrangements.
