DIXON – The group working to renovate Veterans Memorial Pool will kick off its fundraising efforts Saturday.
A hot dog cookout, silent auction and 50/50 raffle will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at County Market, 1380 N. Galena Ave. All proceeds will go to “Pool Partners.”
Management at County Market approached them with the idea, organizer Colleen Brechon said.
She and fellow organizer Marilyn Trulock toured the pool with an engineering firm recently. The engineers were excited about the prospects for the site and are expected to bring back design ideas in the next couple of weeks, Brechon said.
With that said, the Pool Partners have not yet laid out plans for the renovation. They are scheduled to meet with the city’s attorney soon, and a design could come as soon as September.
The group has an account at Midland States Bank under “Pool Partners.” The only way to donate by check is to make it payable to “Pool Partners,” Brechon said.
Receipts are kept of everyone who donates; the account has about $18,000 in it from fundraising efforts several years ago.
Two authorized signatures are needed to withdraw funds, and Trulock, Brechon and Mayor Jim Burke are the only three authorized.
Brechon said she made small deposits to the account the past few years to keep it alive.
County Market is not the only business to have approached pool supporters looking to start fundraising. Dixon Iron & Metal, 78 Monroe Ave., also has set up a program where those recycling items can donate the money they receive to Pool Partners.
The Dixon Park District, which owns the pool, has said it will cooperate with the group’s efforts.
