All-star team was all heart

It’s a beautiful August morning … baseball practices are done and the banter of the crowds at the baseball parks have ceased. The duffle bags are unpacked and uniforms are laundered and folded to be put away until spring. It was a season to remember.

Our Rock Falls Junior League All-Star team won the district title in Sterling, the sectional in Mendota, and then the Illinois State Baseball title in Spring Valley. The team went on to make it into the second round of the central regional playoffs in Fort Wayne, Ind. What an adventure! Our boys played their hearts out on those fields, and they have much to be proud of. But before we put it all behind us and our athletes look ahead to their next sports’ goals, we must stop and look back to those who made our baseball dreams possible.

Our boys would not have had the opportunity to accomplish what they did without this amazing support from our community. My husband, Ron, and I often smile and say that these players probably won’t realize just what they accomplished until they are much older. Right now, it is all just a part of their growing up.

But we realize we witnessed this team’s heart, their skill and their never giving up until the last out was called. This baseball odyssey will live in our hearts, and yet we look forward to many more successful seasons for them. They are a fine group of athletes.

Again, many thanks, and go Rock Falls! A listing of our community supporters will be included in the Thank Goodness section in today’s paper.

There’s a movement afoot in the Illinois Legislature to name former President Barack Obama’s birthday (Aug. 4) as a legal holiday in Illinois. What do you think?
