Dixmoor mayor fires top cop over 'embarrassment'

DIXMOOR (AP) — The mayor of a southern Chicago suburb says she fired the chief of police because she felt he embarrassed the village by asking for assistance from the Cook County sheriff's office.

The outgoing Dixmoor police chief, Robert Fox, says he had a shortage of officers to cover a midnight shift this past weekend and called on the county to provide extra manpower.

Fox tells WFLD TV (http://bit.ly/1cjMO1s ) that the Cook County Sheriff's Police responded immediately, sending five officers to Dixmoor.

Mayor Dorothy Armstrong said Thursday she felt the call for help was unnecessary and an embarrassment to the village.

Dixmoor's police department has only nine full-time officers.
