STERLING – About a month away from the Taste of Fiesta festivities, the planning continues, as do some changes.
The Fun Fest will start at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 at Grandon Civic Center, instead of the previously announced 11 a.m. start, and will go until 2 p.m., at which point local and regional bands will take the stage and play a diverse representation of Mexican music, said Irene Lewis-Wimbley, a Whiteside County family care coordinator who is helping organize the taste.
A week after the Taste of Fiesta is the Fiesta Parade, which Kim Ewoldsen, the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, said already has 13 registered floats.
The taste’s opening ceremony will begin at noon, Lewis-Wimbley said, and include a color guard from the Air National Guard, proclamations from Sterling Mayor Skip Lee and Rock Falls Mayor Bill Wescott, a presentation of the Mexican flag and the playing of the American and Mexican national anthems.
The Fun Fest starts before the opening ceremony, Lewis-Wimbley said, because last year some festivalgoers missed it.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a dunk tank, balloon animals, games, raffles and art activities. In addition, there will be information about area social organizations such as the YMCA, the Sinnissippi YWCA , Kiwanis and Boy and Girl Scouts, Lewis-Wimbley said.
There will be a low-rider car show, and food from local vendors.
The Fiesta Parade, Sept. 14, will start at noon at First Avenue and 10th Street in Rock Falls, cross the First Avenue bridge into Sterling, turn east onto Fourth Street and end at the intersection of Fourth Street and Fourth Avenue.
Bridge of Art, a local group of artists, will decorate the parade route, Ewoldsen said, and possibly even the First Avenue bridge.
Registration for parade floats ends Aug. 30, she said.
