SVYSA travel team tryouts are Sunday

The Sauk Valley Youth Sports Academy will hold tryouts for its fastpitch softball teams Sunday at Sauk Valley Community College.

The 14U and 16U tryouts will be at 11 a.m., the 10U and 12U tryouts at 2 p.m. For more information, contact Bob Lowe at 815-289-9153 or lower@svcc.edu.


Jackie Robinson statue defaced

Vandals defaced a statue of barrier-breaking baseball star Jackie Robinson in Brooklyn, scrawling a racial slur, a swastika and anti-Semitic language on the figure outside a minor league baseball park.

The hate crimes task force was investigating and no arrests had been made, a police spokeswoman said.


Bears CB Hayden out for season

Bears cornerback Kelvin Hayden will miss the entire season with a torn left hamstring.

Hayden will require 6 to 8 months for rehabilitation, and surgery is imminent. He is the second Bears player to be lost for the season after defensive end Turk McBride suffered a torn Achilles tendon.

Andrews confirms Bulaga needs surgery

Packers left tackle Bryan Bulaga will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL after getting a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews.

Bulaga was hoping to find a way to still play this season, and the Packers have the option of keeping him on the roster with the hope that he could return for the postseason.


Muhammad ousted from rookie program

Rookie guard Shabazz Muhammad of the Minnesota Timberwolves brought a female guest to his hotel room in violation of the rules of the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program and was sent home, a source familiar with the situation said.

Muhammad also faces a fine for being dismissed from the mandatory four-day program designed to help rookies transition into the league.


Illini LB hurt in first practice with pads

Illinois coach Tim Beckman said starter Eric Finney continues to be evaluated by the medical staff after suffering what appeared to be a knee injury during Wednesday’s morning practice, but Finney seems likely to miss at least the remainder of the week.

Finney, a junior-college transfer from California slated to start at the star position – a hybrid outside linebacker/safety spot – was carted off the field and appeared to be in significant pain.

Stanford to retire Elway’s No. 7

Stanford football will retire its third number when it does so with John Elway’s No. 7 during the Nov. 7 home game against Oregon.

The other two are Ernie Nevers (No. 1) and Jim Plunkett (No. 16).
