Business notebook: Restaurant in search of a name

STERLING – For the past month, a restaurant has been operating where Twin City Cafe once was.

Soon, the restaurant at 23 E. Third St. will get a new name to go along with the new management. What that name will be has yet to be determined, said Michael Lopez, 24, of Rock Falls, who manages it in the building his grandparents own.

The restaurant, now open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., serves traditional American food such as cheeseburgers, hot sandwiches and chicken strips.

Once its staff grows, he wants to offer late-night hours.

Midway Drive-In could benefit from online contest

STERLING – A click of the mouse might help save the Midway Drive-In and Diner.

The majority of drive-in theaters will face closure with the movie industry’s switch from film to digital projectors. Upgrading to digital projection costs about $80,000.

Owners of the 63-year-old theater between Sterling and Dixon said they will need $125,000 to make the switch.

In an effort “to preserve an iconic part of American car culture,” Honda is starting a drive-in fund and donating five digital projectors to drive-ins that gain the most votes online.

To vote for the Midway, click “vote to save a drive-in” and type “Sterling, IL” in the search box. People can vote once a day, and so far, no deadline was given on the site for when voting ends.

Honda also is allowing people to make pledges to the initiative.

Midway owners Mike and Mia Kerz started their own fundraising campaign last fall. They fell short of their initial $40,000 goal, raising only $7,536, but they still are collecting donations at the drive-in.

New title lending company coming to Sterling

STERLING – A new business opening on the eastern edge of Sterling is looking for managers.

TitleMax, a title lending company, is opening a location at 4001 E. Lincolnway, in the east side of the old Sandy’s II restaurant building, across the street from Blain’s Farm & Fleet, which has been divided into at least two spaces.

The title lending company has Illinois locations near Peoria and Chicago’s western suburbs, in addition to locations in Alabama, California, Missouri and Texas, among other states.
