Garza sorry for tiff with Sogard

Texas Rangers pitcher Matt Garza apologized via Twitter for heated remarks directed at Oakland’s Eric Sogard, who drew the ire of the former Chicago Cubs ace Saturday for laying down a safety squeeze bunt during the A’s 4-2 win.

Oakland played small ball against the fielding-challenged Garza, bunting four times, including the safety squeeze by Sogard in the seventh inning that drove in the game’s final run. After the play, Garza was captured by TV cameras yelling at Sogard.

White Sox part ways with Wise

In another sign the White Sox are making room for the future, they announced Saturday they requested waivers on outfielder Dewayne Wise for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.

Wise, 35, is known best for his leaping catch of Gabe Kapler’s drive near the top of the fence in the ninth inning to help preserve Mark Buehrle’s perfect game on July 23, 2009.

The uncle of murder suspect and former NFL star Aaron Hernandez has been killed in a moped crash in Connecticut.

Bristol police identified the victim of the early Saturday morning crash as Robert Valentine of Bristol. It was the second recent fatal accident involving a Hernandez relative.

In June, Thaddeus Singleton III of Bristol was killed when the car he was driving slammed into a country club building. He was married to Hernandez’s cousin.

Hall of Famer Donovan dies at 89

Art Donovan, the Hall of Fame defensive lineman who spent much of his 12-year career with the Baltimore Colts, has died. He was 89.

Back in the day when NFL players made little money, the 6-foot-3, 265-pound Donovan played for the love of the game and the thrill of winning.

He helped the Colts win championships in 1958 and 1959.
