California man dies in ATV accident

OREGON – A California man who was in the area for his brother’s funeral died Friday in an ATV accident in Ogle County.

Gene A. Rycraft, 51, of Sacramento, was westbound at about 6 p.m. Friday on Devil’s Backbone Road when he lost control and went down a steep embankment, the Ogle County Sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The ATV struck a fence post and a utility pole before coming to rest. Rycraft died at the scene, the release said.

His brother, Patrick L. Rycraft, 46, of Mount Morris, died July 4, according to his obituary posted at finchfuneral.com, the Finch Funeral and Crematory website.

The accident is under investigation.
