STERLING – Betty Lou Young, 84, of Sterling, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

She was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Sterling, the daughter of Earl W. and Gladys (Wolber) Leseman. She was a graduate of Wallace School and attended Sterling High School.

She married Lauren E. Young in Sterling on Oct. 7, 1951 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Betty and her husband farmed in Jordan Township until they retired in 1997. Her husband preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 2011.

Prior to her marriage, Betty was employed at the former Bickford’s Drug Store and Pharmacy in Sterling as apprentice pharmacist. She also served as a past Sunday school teacher at her church in Sterling. Betty held interests in spending time at the couple’s cottage on the Mississippi with her family, friends and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, baking and reading.

Survivors include three sons: Barry (Donna) Young, Kris (Amy) Young and Jim Bob Young, all of Sterling; one granddaughter, Lindsay Young of Oak Park; and four grandsons, Bryce Young of Dixon and Chad, Lauren and Adam Young of Sterling; and one great-granddaughter, Aleeya. She is also survived by two sisters, Ruth (Guy) Hayenga of Morrison and Susan (Loren) Wiebenga of Clinton, Iowa; and one brother, Paul (Mary Jo) Leseman of Michigan; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Melvin Leseman; and one sister, Mary Jane (Leseman) Stralow.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11:45 a.m. and the funeral at noon today at Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling, with the Rev. Paul Judd, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Sterling, and the Rev. David Jungnickel, pastor of Coleta United Methodist Church in Sterling, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.

A memorial has been established.
