Take gridiron talk to Twitter

August hit like a linebacker filling a gap on Thursday, and with it came thoughts of high school football.

At least those thoughts started for me, and I am ready to talk about it.

Part of the reason it's central in my mind is that months of speculation and daydreaming gave way to creating an actual plan for our 2013 football preview section. Look for that to hit newsstands and doorsteps on Aug. 29. Just in time for the opening night of prep football in the Sauk Valley.

One of the things we are looking to do is to create a multimedia feel to the print product that will be staining your fingertips.

That starts with you.

On each page for each team in the Sauk Valley, I am leaving a space for thoughts from readers and sports types like us.

Over the next few weeks, I hope that some of you reading this will join the conversation on Twitter.

If you don't have an account, it's free and easy. Just go to and follow the steps for creating an account.

After that, just look for me. Hopefully, you'll see a string of comments about area teams and conferences, and then you can give your opinion in 140 characters or less.

At the end of this stretch, I'll start picking various tweets about teams to use on team pages.

It could come from players. It could from coaches. It could come from former area football stars or informed teachers. It might come from a mom that has insight into her son's team. Who knows?

The purpose is that the final product in our tab will not just consist of the voices of the staff here at SVM, but will provide insight from folks from around the Sauk Valley.

The best way to direct this conversation is if we all start using the same hashtag.

Hashtags are like mini-addresses in the Twitter world. If you use one, others can search for that tag and find everyone that has used that tag over the last few days.

We tried this a little bit last year during basketball season. A few people caught on, but it didn't spark as much talk as I thought.

We will give it another go with football. Hopefully we can have some intelligent discussion, and who knows, maybe you'll end up with your name in a football section that has won national awards in each of the last 6 years.

So, here we go. The hashtag we are going to use is #SVMhuddle.

See what we did there? It lets you know that the conversation is directed to SVM enthusiasts, and that it is about football.

So lets start talking, and we will see you on the sidelines in less than a month.
