17-year-old involved in fatal crash facing charges

The 17-year-old Mount Carroll boy involved in a head-on crash July 24 in which the other driver died will be charged with improper lane usage and with wearing his seat belt incorrectly, State Police said Wednesday.

Donald Sipe has been released from the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Lt. John Biffany said Wednesday, adding that police were waiting for his discharge before filing charges.

Sipe was westbound on U.S. Route 52 near Getz Road around 1 p.m. when his SUV crossed the center line and collided with an SUV driven by John McNamara, 65, of Savanna, who died at the scene. McNamara’s two passengers were taken to area hospitals with unspecified injuries; their status was not available.

According to his obituary, McNamara was a fourth-generation Chicago police officer and avid outdoorsman who retired to Savanna after 31 years on the force.
