Rare stomach bug enters Illinois

CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois health officials have seen four recent cases of a rare parasite that causes gastrointestinal illness. But it’s not clear the Illinois cases are linked to a prepackaged salad mix that’s been identified as the source of sicknesses in Iowa and Nebraska.

Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Sabrina Miller said Tuesday it’s also not clear yet whether the cases of cyclosporiasis are part of the same outbreak reported in 14 other states.

The people who got sick live in Jo Daviess, Lake, Sangamon and Montgomery counties. The Sangamon County resident had traveled to Iowa. None of the Illinois cases required hospitalization.

Cyclospora is a rare parasite that causes diarrhea and other flu-like symptoms.

Illinois is working with federal health officials on the investigation.
