Sauk coaches to host camp

Sauk Valley softball coach Bob Lowe and baseball coach Noel Aponte have formed the Sauk Valley Youth Sports Softball Program. The program will host a camp on Aug. 10-11 at Sauk Valley Community College.

Players ages 9 to 12 will meet from 1-3 p.m. each day. Players 13-16 will meet from 10 a.m. to noon each day. Cost is $20. For more information, contact Lowe at 815-289-9153 or at Lower@svcc.edu.


Sharks tryouts coming up in Sterling

Tryouts for the Sterling Sharks 8U and 14U boys teams will be at 10 a.m. on Aug. 10 at Gartner Park. Contact Kenny Koerner for more information at 815-441-0150.


A-Rod might receive lifetime ban

Alex Rodriguez runs the risk of receiving a lifetime ban from baseball unless the Yankees third baseman agrees to a deal that would call for him to be suspended without pay for the rest of this season and all of 2014, sources said.

If A-Rod rejects the deal, his suspension could be announced as early as today.

Former Cubs pitcher Castillo dead at 44

Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Frank Castillo drowned Sunday in a lake near his Arizona home, his family confirmed. Castillo was 44.

Castillo was drafted by the Cubs and played seven seasons in Chicago. He also pitched for the Rockies, Tigers, Blue Jays, Red Sox and Marlins, and had a career record of 82-104 with a 4.56 ERA.


McQueary testifies about Paterno

Mike McQueary, the former Penn State assistant football coach that reported seeing Jerry Sandusky molesting a boy in the locker room shower, testified Monday that former coach Joe Paterno said the university’s leaders “screwed up” by failing to follow up the 2001 allegation.

McQueary was testiying in the trial of former Penn State President Graham Spanier and two aides, who are charged with covering up the charges of abuse by Sandusky.


Wiebe wins delayed Senior Open playoff

SOUTHPORT, England – Bernhard Langer gave Mark Wiebe one too many chances at the Senior British Open.

Wiebe took advantage of Langer’s failure to close out the tournament, beating the German on the fifth playoff hole Monday at Royal Birkdale for his first senior major title.


Soccer star dies after match

Christian Benitez, a soccer star from Ecuador who led the Mexican league in scoring last season, died Monday, a day after playing in a game for his club in Qatar. He was 27.

The Qatari club El Jaish provided no details about the death.
