YWCA gears up for annual drive

STERLING – August is Membership Month at the YWCA of the Sauk Valley, 412 First Ave.

All memberships from the past year are now renewable. New members also are welcome.

The YWCA supports local programming and services, and is a United Way agency.

Its mission is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

YWCA services include:

■ Domestic violence shelter, counseling, 24-hour hotline, court advocacy, and support, serving 700 to 800 people per year.

■ Sexual abuse prevention education for more than 15,000 school children yearly.

■ 24-hour rape crisis services.

■ Preschool for children 2 and older.

■ Women’s career services, including a boutique of used career clothing.

■ Outreach services for immigrants.

■ Diversity and racial justice training and education.

■ Empowerment programs for girls.

Members also receive a 20 percent discount on the use of YWCA facilities for meetings, family parties, or events.
