What sort of government do you want in Dixon?

Task force seeks public input Monday

DIXON – The governmental task force is nearing the end of its task.

Now, it’s calling on Dixon citizens to participate Monday in its stretch run.

The seven-member panel that was charged with determining which city government will best meet the future needs of Dixon has met weekly since May 1, and is considering recommending one of two forms of government to the City Council.

One recommendation is the commission form with a city administrator, which soon will mirror Dixon’s current government, and the other is a city manager form.

The commission form leaves the description of the administrator’s job in the hands of the city council, while a city manager’s duties are defined by state law.

Also, the commission form grants executive authority to elected officials over various city departments by state law.

The purpose of Monday’s meeting is to give Dixon citizens an opportunity to comment on those two options and/or ask questions of committee members.

The meeting will include a brief review of the committee’s process thus far and a list of pros and cons on the two options.

“Citizens are encouraged to attend to learn more about what their government may involve,” said task force chairwoman Marilyn Coffey.

The panel has studied and talked to officials representing three forms of government from six cities: Rock Falls, Rochelle, Sterling, East Peoria, Ottawa and Dixon.

Some members have said they are undecided between the two options laid out and want to hear what the public has to say.

The task force will make a non-binding recommendation to the City Council on which it feels is better.

A referendum will have to approve any change to the city’s government, and that cannot happen until November 2014.

The City Council may choose to put the task force’s recommendation on the ballot, or citizens can petition to change the form of government regardless of the commissioners’ wishes.

To attend

The Monday meeting of the governmental task force is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, 121 W. Second St., on the second floor in the Council Chambers.
