Task force seeks public’s input

Mayor Jim Burke promised the community that we would have an opportunity to express our opinion on how our city should be governed. He appointed a task force to study and make a recommendation on the best form of government for our municipality, and they are almost ready to give that report.

The task force has done a great job of looking at all of the options, and now wants to know what the public feels about the subject of our governance. The opinion of the community must necessarily be a very important factor in their recommendation to the mayor and commissioners.

The task force has set 6:30 p.m. this Monday, July 29, in City Hall for a public meeting on what form of government they should recommend. They will be making their recommendation in early August, so this is our last chance to speak up and influence their recommendation.

Based on what I have seen in the newspaper, there are strong opinions urging that we keep our current commission form of government by just adding another administrative position. I am sure that those who support the status quo will be at the meeting to express their opinions. Those who think, however, that it is time for a change need to appear at the meeting to let the task force know that the community believes that it’s time for real change.

I urge everyone to attend the meeting Monday evening. If you are unable to attend, please consider sending a letter to the city clerk at City Hall, 121 W. Second St., Dixon, or to her at: Kathe.Swanson@discoverdixon.org on the Internet.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
