SEATTLE – Margaret Helen Grove, 99, of Seattle, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.

She was born Margaret Helen Sloane on Jan. 1, 1914, in Boston. Peg was 9 years old when her family moved to Seattle. Her father, Martin Sloane, was in the insurance business. Peg’s mother, Helen Sloane, graduated from Simmons Girls College in Boston in the late 1800s. Peg was 14 when she met Paul Grove. He was from Dixon and had enrolled at the University of Washington. Homesick, he moved back to Dixon. When Peg was 19, Paul went back to Seattle. They were married. They lived in LaSalle just short of 50 years. They started Grove’s Cleaners, and worked side by side.

When Paul died in 1983, Peg sold the family home and Grove’s Cleaners. She moved back to Seattle with her daughter, Chris Grove, and her two granddaughters, Martina Guarin and Katrina Milne. She lived in Seattle for 30 years. During those years, other family members joined her in the Northwest. She died at home in Seattle, with family by her side. Before she died, she talked about driving in the driveway at 1368 Chartres St., LaSalle. She wanted to go home.

Peg and Paul had six children. At the time of her death, she had two living children, Cindy McKay and Christine Grove. She had lost Anne in infancy, Peggy Grove Schweikert, Sister Mary Paul Grove, and most recently, her only son, Richard “Dick” Grove.

She also is survived by many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Peg’s homecoming will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Aug. 10 at St. Patrick Church in LaSalle. Burial of her ashes next to Paul will be at St. Vincent Cemetery in LaSalle, followed by a reception at the Paramount Club in LaSalle.
