79 teens treated in farm incident

PESOTUM (AP) – Officials at an eastern Illinois hospital now say they treated 79 teenagers who were sprayed with a fungicide as they worked in a cornfield.

Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana said in a news release Thursday that 79 teens were sent to the hospital for treatment. All were expected to be sent home Thursday.

Authorities say the teens were cutting the pollinating tassels off corn plants Thursday morning when the chemical drifted onto them from a crop-duster.

OSHA spokesman Scott Allen said the agency is investigating the incident that happened outside Pesotum. The town is 15 miles south of Champaign.

Brad Rollings of Villa Grove said his 13-year-old son Tyler was among the teens who were sprayed. Rollings said his son seemed to be fine.
