One dead, 3 hurt in SUV head-on

SAVANNA – A 65-year-old Savanna man was killed and a 17-year-old Mount Carroll boy and two other people were injured when their SUVs hit head-on at 1 p.m. Wednesday on state Route 64, about midway between the two towns, State Police said in a news release.

The teen, Donald J. Sipe, was westbound when, for reasons unknown, he entered the eastbound lane and collided with the SUV driven by John D. McNamara, the release said.

McNamara died at the scene; his two passengers and Sipe were taken to area hospitals with unspecified injuries.

The lead investigator was interviewing Sipe Wednesday evening at Mercy Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, so no further details were available.
