City offices close, mayor says

First-floor police department renovations may take until end of year

STERLING – The downtown Coliseum’s renovations once were expected to be completed in early July, but now September seems more likely.

Discovering asbestos was one reason the completion date was pushed back, but Mayor Skip Lee said he’s optimistic that work on the second floor, which houses the city offices, will be finished by September.

“It hasn’t been anything major,” Lee said. “Sometimes you run into those glitches and it takes you a while to iron out.”

The Coliseum’s first floor, which houses the police department, should be done by the end of the year, Lee said.

In December 2010, the council voted to issue up to $4.5 million in taxable general obligation bonds to repair and rebuild the 80-year-old Coliseum. In May 2012, the city awarded a $4.6 million contract to Sjostrom and Sons Construction of Rockford.

Among other things, a geothermal heating and cooling system and more insulation will be installed, the plumbing and electric equipment will be replaced and the police dispatch area will be expanded. Renovations also include a $58,575 video surveillance system to help protect police officers and staff.

During the construction, City Council meetings are being held at the City Hall Annex, 20 W. Third St. in Library Plaza, in the former Blockbuster video building.
