DIXON – Is Dixon one of 100 Small Town Gems in the United States?
The city could find out within the next 3 months if it is a candidate for the 2015 "Small Town Gems: America's Top 100 Small Towns."
The publication bills itself as the "Consumer Reports" of small-town destinations. "We travel small town America to discover, photograph, and recommend the best small towns for your travel destinations," its website declares.
Its elite list now contains only one other Illinois city – Galena.
Dixon was nominated by a former resident – who wants to remain anonymous – because of its ties to Ronald Reagan, its riverfront, its encouragement of the arts, – and because it was chosen from among 3,000 other communities to host the Grammy-winning band Mumford & Sons, a concert that it turned into a 2-day festival with other notable bands.
About 500 nominations from across the country will be reviewed. Those that advance to "candidate town" status will be researched more thoroughly and considered for the Top 100 listing, according to the Small Town Gems website.
Geneseo has attained "candidate town" status for the 2014 publication, the only Illinois town on the list, the website says.
The research consists of Internet information about the community, phone interviews and eventually an unannounced visit by the selection group, if it reaches "candidate" status, the website says.
Fulton is listed as a "novelty visit" on the website for its Dutch windmill.
Dixon was considered about 15 to 20 years ago, but failed to make the list.
