Gail J. Dirksen

OREGON – Gail J. Dirksen, 75, a lifetime Ogle County resident, died Monday, July 22, 2013, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

She was born Aug. 6, 1937, near Kings, the daughter of Lucas and Violet (Kivell) Hayenga. She attended Kings Grade School, and was a 1955 graduate of Rochelle High School. Gail married Donald Dirksen on Aug. 1, 1970, in Oregon. She worked for 24 years at the Ogle County Treasury Department, where she retired as treasurer in 2000. She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church, where she served in the Ladies Aid Society; was a Sunday school teacher; chairman of the funeral luncheon committee; and treasurer. In Gail’s spare time, she enjoyed crafts, knitting, crocheting, gardening, and her dogs, Babe and Sandy.

She is survived by her husband, Donald of Oregon; children, Doug (Diane) Meyers of Lost Nation, Melody Kirchner of Rockford, and Denise (Michael) Leonard of Belvidere; stepdaughters, Susan Strickler of Oregon, Julie Logan of Winnebago, and Nancy (Ronald) Boyden of Oregon; sister-in-law, Sue Hayenga; brother-in-law, Reuben Barnhart; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her stepson, Dean Dirksen; brother, Manno; and sister-in-law, Mary Barnhart.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home in Oregon. Visitation also will be from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., at Ebenezer Reformed Church near Oregon, with Brion Brooks, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at White Rock Cemetery near Kings.

Memorials have been established to OSF Hospice Association and Serenity Hospice and Home.
