DIXON – The public is invited to help BorgWarner celebrate turning 50.

Its manufacturing facility at 1350 Franklin Grove Road will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday for plant tours, kids' games, an auto show and free refreshments.

The iconic Borg-Warner Trophy, given to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, also will be on display.

The facility, which makes automotive components, was initially built by Shurhit Products in 1961 and joined BorgWarner's automotive companies in 1963.

After five expansions, the facility has grown to 130,000 square feet and employs 220 people, working in three shifts.

The BorgWarner Global Safety Award recognizes facilities that maintain a minimal number of work-related injuries or illnesses. Employees elected to donate their $10,000 award to the Dixon Fire Department to purchase a new fire safety house.

The national company is based in Auburn Hills, Mich., and has 57 facilities in 19 countries.

"[Our employees'] passion for excellence, commitment to protecting the environment, dedication to safety and enthusiasm for supporting local community will continue to drive BorgWarner's success in the future," said Chris Lanker, plant manager. "We are proud to celebrate this important milestone with the Dixon community."
